Will Beijing Olympics be boycotted?

April 12th, 2008 by Melvin

You’ve heard about it almost anywhere in newspapers, news and radio. You’ve even heard it from your friends about the widespread protests on Beijing Olympics. (2nd hottest debate to Mas Selamat Escapade. He might be enjoying eating Rambutans in the jungle though.)
China’s handling of the unrest in Tibet, rocked last month by the worst anti-government riots in decades, has sparked calls for an Olympic boycott.

Though China government has tried to draw the line between China’s politics and their own glorious event, Olympics 2008, people worldwide are still not convinced. Do you think that China government do not have enough human rights to their own people or rather, the Tibetans?

Presently, organizers were forced to cut short of the relay or make last minute route changes to avoid waiting protesters. But is it good news for Pro-Beijing Olympic supporters?

Protesters have made the relay an inconvenient experience to organizers and fans worldwide. Olympic Touch relay has been playing ‘Hide and Seek’ in San Fransisco and personally, I think it’s going to play ‘Hide & Seek’ till it reaches back in Beijing.

“I’m disappointed, annoyed, tired, frustrated. I mean, it’s not every day you get to see the Olympic torch.” - Miss Sydnet Sullivan, 18.

“We were cheated, because I think the meaning of the relay was to show the whole world that our country is hosting the Olympics.” - Mr Micheal Huo, a Chinese engineer working in the US.

(See figure on the left, Map of San Fransisco) Red line is the original route but however, the route was modified and shortened to the blue line.

Dear Readers, what are your views and say? Post up a comprehensive and detailed comment on your thoughts, views on Beijing Olympics and whether should the Beijing Olympic Relay continue or boycott it (for the safety of civilians over Anti- Beijing Olympic Terrorism)?

While those protests were carried out in response to the Politburo’s actions in Tibet, I felt that the Olympic event was the actual victim. Bring forth your dissension to the chinese embassies, why attack the flame?

Aye… there’s obviously fault to both sides.

My hometown was one of the competing cities bidding for the 2008 Olympics back in 2001. When Beijing 2008 had been confirmed, the Olympic Comittee said that among the reasons for giving China the honour of hosting the Olympics, one was to give China a chance to correct their human rights abuses. By giving them a chance to showcase the event to the world, they expected changes. Protestors don’t seem to agree though, and they are disrupting the Olympics as a strong sign of their thoughts on China’s human rights.

Personally? I think having the protests and such would be alright. If done peacefully and without major disruptions. But I think its overdone now. I mean I gotta empathize with the people who enjoy the Olympics as a great time to unite all the world nations. A time such as this should be focusing on the unity of the world through sports, not a time to point fingers at other nation’s faults. Sure, using a major international event to point your message across is fine, but I think there’s been plenty of that already. Perhaps too much. Your message has gotten across. But in the end, both sides won’t lose out that much. The people in the middle do, the competitors. They train for years just to experience this, and lucky them, its spoiled due to the host country’s reputation. China may not be the most humanitarian country in the world, but them having a permanent seat on the UN council kinda shows that other world nations are willing to give them a chance. Why can’t you?

China has much to answer for in their human rights, but why has no one pointed them out as strongly as now? No country is perfect. I’m pretty sure several (or perhaps even all) countries have done something that has garnered international criticism before. Just because a country has more glaring faults than others, it shouldn’t mean they should be subjected to international scrutiny, especially when it comes to disgracing an international event. Perhaps protests are fine. But the protestors are getting out of control. You can speak your views. But disrupting a torch relay in the USA? That’s a bit overdone (pun intended). And why is no one criticizing Tibetan monks for using violence? Plenty have. I’ve heard some views saying that they’ve got right to, since their own rights have been suppressed. But then again, using violence will bring you down to their level won’t it?

If my hometown had won the bid, I’m certain there would be none of this ruckus affecting the Olympic games. When you disrupt the Olympic games now, you’re not attacking China, you’re attacking the Olympics themselves. China is merely hosting, but by disrupting torch relays, you attack an international event that the world enjoys. Let the people enjoy the games. You only have the summer Olympics once every four years. Don’t spoil it for those who have dreamed of this moment for so long. Your message has been understood. China has human rights issues. But disrupting the Olympics or not, China isn’t going to turn around overnight are they?

I am very disappointed on certain Europe countries and American’s mass media and policitians who are taking advantages of the 2008 Olympics by playing on Tibets issue to fulfill their political objectives and obtain their personal benefits.
Everyone who has common sense and love the world should not involve in this type of crazy and unethical action.
We should preserve the objective and spirit of Olympics.
We should dispise and boycott mass media and polictions who boycott 2008 Olympics.
