Asian Idol

December 17th, 2007 by Jonathan

Hady Mirza I was so surprised to hear Ata announced Hady Mirza’s name as the first Asian Idol (just like Melvin). Frankly I think Hady owes his achievement to his fans in Singapore and also to his looks. Let’s face it, did you think he had the best vocals in the show? No. BUT whatever it is, he did Singapore proud so I shall not rant further. Congratulations!

Apart from Hady’s victory, there are other things about this little Asian Idol competition that really puzzles me. One thing is for sure, the planning and execution of this regional competition sucks to the core. You really have to excuse my language here but who the hell organized this competition? There was too much publicity for Mike (Indonesian Idol) with him performing so many times tonight and so much emphasis of his name during the entire show. Yes, I understand the fact that Asian Idol is held in Jakarta, but that’s not a good enough excuse.

Hady and Jaclyn sang the song ‘Freedom’ originally sang by George Michael together and boy do you have to hear what Malaysian host Kui Jien had to say after their performance, “Singapore and Malaysia in perfect harmony. Something you don’t get to see very often.” Somehow I cannot deny the amount of truth behind his statement. It’s just that something as sensitive as this shouldn’t be said on a show that is being broad casted to so many countries around the region. Ah, Just ignore me. *Pedra Branca*

Here are some other points to highlight:

  1. Phuong Vy and her fellow Vietnam Idol Judge Siu Black sang the song ‘I love Rock & Roll‘ during the results show. I couldn’t understand a single word that came out of their mouth.
  2. Mau Marcelo (Philippine Idol) has a great and very powerful voice. She deserves to win although her personality kinda freaks me a little. She’s quite a Mau-ful.
  3. The host of Asian Idol, Daniel is really unprofessional. Frequently seen preying on Phuong Vy. And I caught him speechless on multiple occasions.
  4. Ken Lim should seriously stop chewing on his spectacle frame.
  5. That guy from Hady Hady Fan Club is f-ing Gay. Hady Hardy makes him hard.
  6. Poor Agnes Monica. She did the opening performance for the results show only to be insulted by the poor audio system they have over there. The music was playing, but her voice, it was missing! By the way, who is Agnes Monica?
  7. Mike is actually Joakim Gomez in a fat suit (SG Idol 2 contestant) I’m Serious!
  8. Mikquim

See, I told you so.

PS: When they said Hady’s album sales hit Platinum, what they meant was it sold more than 15,000 copies. Not the 1,000,000 criteria they have in the US.

    Hi
I was upset to for the result. Talk abut Mirza winning, i’m agree with you. I think that not he that has best voice. I do prefer choose the Indian than him. But it often happens in Idol, everywhere. Where the people choice (from SMS) is the key of winning. Everything what the judges said it not affected so much….

I think that he won because his face. And i think that he voten by the girls. It’s not fair for me.

I’m an Indonesian, in my objective i think Mike has the best voice, but i agree if Mike hasn’t get his best performance that nite. The performance of others were good to, except Mirza. In my opinion not Mirza the Winner. Everyone got the winner but not Mirza. I regret the result

I think u misunderstood the word Asian Idol, It’s not Asian Singing idol so to be an Asian Idol u got to have everything as a package u can’t survive with just singing . so u have to learn more english and accept your defeat because u are stupid .

I agree with you. What Kui Jien said about S’pore and Malaysia is totally unprofessional and thoughtless! What makes it worse was that he used to/ is still hosting and acting in S’pore productions! WTF is he trying to do, murder his own career?? So stupid that guy I tell you! And now, I’m sure the whole world would think that both Sg and Mas are the worst neighbours ever! His statement is not exactly true, and might even worsen the political situation further as it already is.. Stupid bugger!

Hi… I agree that the show was not organized properly. There were too many blunders. But I just want to give an honest reason why Hadi won (No offense, I like his relazed way of singing), but the truth is what happened is because of the 2 countries submission requirment in texting, a lot of people had done the following:
    - Text for 1 country, their favourite. A lot of indos would text for Mike, a lot of malaysians for Jac, a lot of Indians for Abhijit …etc.
    - The other country to text: Of course, choose the least likely country to win, cause say if I”m a fan of Mike & I know Jac is really good competitor, I wont choose Jac. I’d choose the least likely to win, ie. I chose Hady. small country, not so unique voice. That’s what I’ve done & I think a lot of people have done this, hence the 2nd country choice came up from most cells, because a lot of people didnt think Sg could actually win…

Totally agree with what Ina said.

India has over a billion people, Indonesia probably way into the millions. Their first choices would definitely be the singers from their respective countries. No doubt about that. BUT in order for their votes to be valid, they have to vote for a second singer.

In this case the girls would choose Hady Mirza for his good looks and also a portion of them would probably be saying “Ah, let’s just vote the person least likely to win.” BOOM. over a billion votes (sorry for exaggerating) goes to Hady. And there you have it, our first Asian Idol.

Note: Based on speculation only, may not be true.

Well obviously I would vote for Hady being a Singaporean myself. But for the 2nd contestant, I voted for Mike from Indonesia cos I thought he was very good and would have a very good chance of winning. I could have voted for Vietnam instead but contrary to others choosing a weaker singer, I chose the best as one of my choices.

Regardless, Hady won becos he sang and performed for the audience, very cool, very relaxed…he just had fun, no expectation…so I guess that pays in the end.

As the judges said, in the end Asia wins…cos now I know who Mike is and he has a wonderful voice, I know who Mau is and she is a soulful singer, I know Vy who is very pretty, I know who is Abijeet who surprisingly sings very well..and of course I know Jac, her voice is power to the mah…Congrats Hady! Enjoy the trip around the world.

    Thr r 3 factors of hady’s winning:
    a. 2nd vote factor (just like ina said)
    b. Gud luk
    c. Spore ppl r rich enuff to send sms as many as they want..lolz

rite after Ata announced the winner i left the hall just like most ppl did tho we knew thr wud still b 4other performs. Even thrs a moment of silent b4 they cud finally applaused. Every1 just seemed2b so shocked. Judges, hosts, audiences of course n even the idols

seriously i think asian idol has tarnished its reputation. this idol thingy is known around the world and it requires full preparation. i personally thought indonesian host are no doubt stupid and unprofessional at all. they should have vj utt hosting the show and some other people instead. lots of blunders really turn me off. omg

and i think being singaporean like i am, i absolutely agree with anyone that says singaporean is rich and smsing is nothing to them.

yeah sms just cost 20cents here or could be lower. thats the reason why singaporean won.. take note, singapore are generous people who love wasting smses.. hahahaaha

The hosts were really unprofessional. So much dead air and at one point kui jien and daniel were bantering over who likes Phuong Vy more?!?!?!

    Like, wth?

Plus, the Agnes Monica sound thing was a production error. I heard the producers ranting, “10 seconds up! Switch screen!” and various other instructions! Boo-boo!

i dont agree with ina. i’m a singaporean. obviously i vote for Hady. he is a good singer with a wholesome package … good looks, charming, humble …. & my second choice is Mike fm Indonesia as I think he’s pretty good too. My second choice is not choosing a not so good singer, but who I feel that is good, after Hady. As for the M’sian & Phils .. personally i think their voice is too strong & loud. the other 2 just doesnt have strong personality.

Asian idol is a voting system and looks and charm is certainly part of why people vote. Hady and Jaclyn sang Freedom that night which was personally the BEST song for 2 nights.

One of the reason that Hady won because he did not focus on winning after Ken Lim told him he had at most a 50-50 chance of winning. He was just out there to give his best and it was clear that other contestants especially Mau focus on winning. They want to make their country proud. That may be why they restricted their full potential to do well. If they were to put all that behind and focus on blowing the crowd away, one of them might win. I agree that if it was based on the voice, Jac, Mike and Mau definitely stands out. However this competition is just simply not that case.

Life is unpredictable and let’s just congratulate Hady. Well Done!

Agnes monica is a popular singer in indonesia and she had sung with people like jerry from that f4 thingy guy. I dont really like her though.

The hosts, well. Daniel was .. very very unprofessional. And the girl was ok, but i’d prefer people like gurmit hosting it.

Hady won because of SMSES, and yes, singaporeans are rich. sms liek, 20 cents only .

I dont really like Mike and hady , the only one i liked was Mau. And i would have preferred Elliott Yamin to come and perform but it was .., Taylor Hicks. aww. ):
